During this period of social isolation, uncertainty and abrupt transitions, college students can be prone to increased feelings of anxiety and depression. Removal from their social support system and extracurricular activities at their school can cause students to feel less connected with their friends, organizations, and hobbies. In addition, they are facing uncertainty about their future, their own health, and the health of their friends and loved ones. This experience coupled with the current reckoning on racism in our society may further exacerbate feelings of loss, and a diminished sense of control, making students especially vulnerable to developing mental health concerns. Participation in this group experience can foster resilience, decrease feelings of isolation, and can promote the development of healthy coping skills to manage stressors and challenges.
